Jill Fanshawe Kato is a distinguished British ceramic artist celebrated for her rare fusion of Japanese ceramic tradition and British studio pottery. Trained at Chelsea School of Art and later under master potters in Japan, her pedigree is exceptional and internationally recognised. Working between London and Devon, she creates one‑off hand‑built, coiled and slab‑formed pieces, each fired to high stoneware temperatures and finished with her signature painterly slips and glazes.

Her work is instantly identifiable for its lyrical depictions of birds, plants and wildlife, inspired by decades of close observation of the natural world. This expressive imagery, combined with her refined technical skill and Japanese influences, has earned her more than forty exhibitions in Japan alone, with pieces held in major public and private collections worldwide. Collectors value her ceramics for their individuality, craftsmanship and the strong provenance that accompanies every piece.

Among her most charming themes is her avian work, where she captures the delicacy and character of these small birds with a light, fluid touch. These pieces exemplify her ability to blend British naturalism with Japanese aesthetic sensibility, making them particularly appealing to mature collectors seeking distinctive, nature‑inspired ceramics with enduring market appeal.
