Women in Modern British Art
Fifteen painters and potters, from Dorothea Sharp's sunlit beaches to the salt and soda glazes of Jane Hamlyn and Ruthanne Tudball. Their stories, how to recognise their work, and the pieces we have for you now.
Fifteen women. Twenty-five works. One very good reason to look closely.
For much of the twentieth century, the women in this brochure were painting and potting alongside the men who got the retrospectives. Dorothea Sharp was a fixture at the Royal Academy for decades. June Miles kept her own name and her own studio through two marriages to well-known artists. Jane Hamlyn and Ruthanne Tudball, between them, showed a generation of potters what salt and soda can do to a surface.
We have gathered their work here because, pot for pot and picture for picture, it is some of the best we handle. In many cases it is also better value than equivalent work by the men they exhibited beside. That is changing, and we think it should.
If you are new to collecting, start with what you keep coming back to. A Kate Wyatt or a Karen Atherley is an easy first step; a Frink or a Sharp is a different sort of decision, and we will happily talk it through with you. If you already collect, you will know several of these names, and we hope one or two are new.
