Donald McIntyre Paintings for Sale
Donald McIntyre (1923-2009) : The Coastal Colourist of Postwar Britain
Donald McIntyre (1923–2009) was one of Britain’s most successful postwar artists, whose dramatic and expressive landscapes epitomized the spirit of the British coastline with vivid color and lyrical brushwork. Often associated with Wales, McIntyre was born in Leeds to Scottish parents and spent his early years on the west coast of Scotland, to which he owed much of his artistic inspiration.
From Dentistry to Painting
McIntyre took an unconventional path to art. A dentist's son and a qualified dentist himself, after the Glasgow Dental Hospital, he studied under evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art because his chief concern was painting. Having completed his national service in the army and worked as an education health officer, he made the decision to paint full-time when he turned 40.
He achieved his first commercial success at the Howard Roberts Gallery in Cardiff, and he spent over 45 years living and painting in North Wales, painting en plein air, regularly returning to Iona, Anglesey, and Cornwall, all places that inspired some of his most famous works.
Artistic Style and Evolution
McIntyre’s earlier work, made from the 1960s to the early 1980s, used earthy palettes and cryptic narratives. Figures emerged in isolated, enigmatic scenes — whether under the shadow of a beach hut or looking down at an object by itself — that allowed viewers to make up their own stories. They were emotionally resonant works, laid out in hessian mounts in mid-century chrome and imbued with a kind of enigmatic tension, offering a delightful retro-strip tease.
But his later work employed a colorful and expressive palette indebted to the Scottish Colourists – particularly Francis Cadell and Anne Redpath. McIntyre’s use of acrylics had a revitalising effect on his landscapes – electric seas, purple rocks, and lucid sands – with figures diminished to little more than scale markers, the landscape being the star.
Technique and Legacy
McIntyre was a talented natural draftsman, painting en plein air and seeking to quickly capture the moment before developing the design in the studio. His spontaneous works combine spontaneity, directness of approach, and a keen sense of colour and shape, the freedom of a sketch with the discipline of a studio painting.
McIntyre’s paintings are in high demand at auction these days, with prices consistently on the rise. His painting is praised for its emotional connectivity, technical accomplishment, and individual style, and is considered an important figure in contemporary English landscape painting.
